Support for the families of those suffering from addictive and eating disorders

These disorders not only affect the individual, but also everyone around them so it is normal for families to need support and many residential treatment programmes will offer help to the family as part of their care package.

Immediate confidential help and support for the families of those suffering from addictive and eating disorders is available from the Veterinary Surgeons’ Health Support Programme and Vet Helpline.
Adfam is a national charity working with families affected by drugs and alcohol and is a leading agency in substance related family work. They provide a range of publications and resources for families about substances and criminal justice including an online message board and a database of local support groups.

Families Anonymous is a worldwide 12-step fellowship of relatives and friends of people involved in the abuse of mind-altering substances, or with related behavioural problems. Many local groups across the UK.

Al-Anon is a worldwide 12-step fellowship open to anyone whose life is, or has been, affected by someone else’s drinking. They believe alcoholism is a family illness and that changed attitudes can aid recovery.

The adult helpline is for people over 18 in the United Kingdom who wish to talk about eating disorders and to obtain information about help available in their locality. About a third of the calls are from people with an eating disorder, a third from friends and relatives and the rest a mixture of professionals and students.
